Piedmont is now searching for a new head football coach.
Trent Worley confirmed Wednesday that he has accepted the head coaching position at Kiefer High School next season. He attributes the decision and move to personal reasons.
“It was an opportunity from a personal standpoint that I couldn’t pass up,” Worley said. “It was something that just popped up and it moved really quickly. Professionally, it might be looked at as maybe a little crazy, but at this point in my career I want what is best for my family.”
Worley is from northeast Oklahoma and the move will decrease driving distance to see family on both he and his wife’s side. He says it was also a draw for his seventh-grade and fourth-grade sons.
Worley spent two seasons at Piedmont, racking up a 8-13 record with a trip to the Class 5A playoffs this past season. He went 3-7 in his first year and 5-6 in his second.
“I felt like our kids really bought into what was going on,” Worley said of the players over the past two seasons. “They really worked hard and did everything we asked them to do. We took the program and improved it. I’m pleased with the progress we were able to make. I’m not leaving for anything other than an opportunity for my family.”
Worley was an assistant at Lake Hamilton High School in Arkansas and at Stillwater High School before coming to Piedmont.
Piedmont Athletic Director Layne Jones was unable to be reached for comment before this story went to press. The head coaching position is currently listed on the Piedmont schools website’s job board postings.
