First Baptist Church Music Minister Lyndall Jones has been bringing down the house lately, so to speak, with his uplifting version of “O Happy Day.”
Since Jones has been the music minister at First Baptist Church in Piedmont, he has brought a flare of musicianship to the church that is second to none.
“The way I believe that I am called by God is to use music or the arts of any kind to bring a focal point on who God is,” Jones said. “I’m using arts tools through music to worship God and point to who he his, whether it is something that we can understand from a textual standpoint by reading the bible or whether it’s something that is expressed through feeling or emotions.”
Jones said his goal during worship is to have participation and to make worship fun for anybody.
“There are times when you perform when people would listen, much like you would not participate when somebody is talking,” he said.
His inspiration for his version of “O, Happy Day” has come from many places, like old Gospel hymns to the movie “Sister Act 2”.
Jones is a baritone vocalist. He is a college graduate of Oklahoma Baptist University.
He went to graduate school at Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary in Fort Worth, Texas. He received his Master’s Degree from there.
“I’ve enjoyed music my entire life,” he said. “That’s been one of those things where it’s just a natural progression to get to go to school and it’s where God put me.”
He came to First Baptist Church three years ago. It was a friend who told him about the church, and he said he feels it was God who steered him to Piedmont.
“I felt like God was pushing me in this direction,” he said. “I actually tried to tell them that I don’t think them I should come and they kept talking to me.
It ended up being one of those things where they were more sure about me then I was bout leaving. I think God speaks to us a lot of times through people.”
It’s been a natural fit for Jones, and he’s glad he can inject some of his flare into the music and make it his own style, and he said the response has been great.
